Community Health Agent (Epidemiology and public health)
The Public and Community Health team (eSPiC) was founded in 1994 at the Drassanes International Health Unit of the Catalan Health Institute. Since then, it has worked to achieve equitable, comprehensive, and sustainable healthcare to address health needs at the individual, family, and community levels in the field of International Health and Immigration. The human and professional dimension has been and continues to be the backbone of our interdisciplinary team, built over these years by various professionals, including doctors, nurses, community health workers, administrative staff, anthropologists, psychologists…
Since 2013, we have been part of the infectious diseases/preventive medicine team at the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital / Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR), and of the ICS international health program (PROSICS), working towards a health care system that looks beyond the comprehensive clinical and curative services of the highest quality offered by the hospital, promoting the integration of community activities into healthcare by incorporating community orientation at all levels of the organization.

This project aims strategically to strengthen networking for promotion, prevention, and active surveillance against Notifiable Diseases (ND) and other situations of interest due to epidemiological vulnerability, especially among the immigrant population, through the implementation of a Community and Public Action Model (MACIP) across Catalonia, based on participatory action research (PAR) processes carried out by the Community and Health Team (ESPIC) through its professionals, doctors, nurses, community health agents (CHAs), together with the Epidemiological Surveillance Services (SVE), Primary Care Teams with their community liaisons, and specialized units in referral hospitals.
