Head of the Biomedical Data Intelligence Unit
The Biomedical Data Intelligence Unit (BIDU) is a transversal core facility at the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) providing advanced expertise in biostatistics, bioinformatics, data science and artificial intelligence applied to biomedical research. The Head of BIDU will lead the strategic, scientific and operational development of the unit, strengthening VHIR’s competitiveness in data-driven and AI-enabled biomedical research.
Education and qualifications:
Required:
University degree in Data Science, Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, Bioinformatics, Mathematics, Life Sciences or related fields.
Fluency in Spanish and English (C1 level).
Desired:
Fluency in Catalan.
PhD in a related discipline.
Additional training in project management, research methodology, data governance and/or quality systems.
Experience and knowledge:
Required:
Proven experience leading multidisciplinary technical and/or scientific teams.
Strong background in at least one of the following areas: biostatistics, bioinformatics, data science or artificial intelligence.
Experience in biomedical research, healthcare or academic environments.
Experience managing complex transversal services or core facilities.
Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Desired:
Experience leading or co-leading research lines or competitive projects involving AI and biomedical data science.
Track record of participation in scientific publications and/or funded projects.
Experience interacting with international research consortia or European projects.
Main responsibilities and duties:
Define, implement and monitor the strategic roadmap of BIDU, aligned with VHIR’s institutional and scientific strategy.
Position BIDU as a reference unit in biomedical data intelligence at national and international level.
Identify and promote the adoption of emerging methodologies in data science and AI applied to biomedical research.
Directly manage and coordinate the Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, and Data Science & AI sections.
Define objectives, responsibilities and performance indicators for section leads.
Promote collaboration across sections and prevent organizational silos.
Provide high-level methodological and strategic advice to research groups.
Oversee BIDU operations, ensuring quality, reproducibility, data governance and ethical compliance.
Supervise budget planning, monitoring and sustainability of the unit.
Coordinate with IT, Digital Transformation, Quality and other transversal units.
Promote and oversee training and knowledge-transfer activities in BIDU areas.
Labour conditions:
Full-time position: 37,5h/week.
Starting date: as soon as possible
Gross annual salary: Remuneration will depend on experience and skills. Salary ranges are consistent with our Collective Agreement pay scale.
