Biostatistics Technician

The Biomedical Data Intelligence Unit (BIDU) is a transversal core facility within the Digital Transformation Area, providing advanced expertise in biostatistics, bioinformatics, data science and artificial intelligence applied to biomedical research. BIDU serves as a key interface between research groups, clinical settings and institutional digital capabilities, ensuring methodological rigor, reproducibility, robust data governance, compliance with quality systems and the responsible use of data and AI.
Position Overview
The Biostatistics Officer will provide specialized biostatistical and analytical support to a wide range of biomedical research projects across the Vall d’Hebron Campus. The role involves contributing to study design, data analysis, methodological soundness and interpretation of results.
This position combines strong statistical expertise with the applied use of AI and machine learning techniques, alongside a service-oriented mindset. The successful candidate will work closely with researchers, clinicians, bioinformaticians, data scientists and project managers within BIDU.
Education and qualifications:
Required:
University degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Bioinformatics, Health Sciences, Biomedical Engineering or a related field.
Professional proficiency in Catalan, Spanish and English.
Desired:
Postgraduate training (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Biostatistics, Statistics, Data Analysis, Artificial Intelligence or related disciplines.
PhD in Biostatistics, Epidemiology or Biomedical Research.
Additional training in research methodology, data management or quality systems.
Experience and knowledge:
Required:
Minimum of 2 years of professional experience (or equivalent) performing tasks related to data science, biostatistics, statistical analysis or biomedical data analysis.
Solid background in biostatistics, including:
descriptive and inferential statistics,
regression models,
survival analysis,
multivariate and longitudinal analysis.
Proven proficiency in statistical and analytical programming languages, particularly Python and/or R, including their use for:
data preparation and analysis,
implementation of machine learning and AI-based analytical approaches in biomedical or health-related research contexts.
Practical experience in data management and analytical workflows, including:
data cleaning and preprocessing,
transformation and preparation of research datasets.
Ability to produce technical and statistical reports and to communicate results clearly to non-technical audiences.
Desired:
Experience working in close collaboration with biomedical or translational research groups, including direct interaction with principal investigators, postdoctoral researchers and PhD students.
Experience in clinical research environments, including clinical trials and/or observational clinical studies.
Familiarity with clinical data capture systems such as REDCap or other electronic data capture (EDC) platforms.
Experience or familiarity with ETL tools and workflows, including data extraction, transformation and loading processes applied to biomedical or research datasets.
Strong practical knowledge of computational and bioinformatics environments, including:
Unix / GNU Linux systems.
Experience with statistical analysis software commonly used in biomedical research, such as Stata and/or GraphPad Prism.
Experience working under ISO 9000 quality standards or within quality-regulated environments, including process standardization, documentation and continuous improvement.
Knowledge of reproducible research practices, including scripted analyses, version control and documentation.
Strong service- and customer-oriented mindset, with the ability to work closely with biomedical researchers.
Main responsibilities and duties:
Provide biostatistical support and services to research groups across the Vall d’Hebron Campus, including:
participation in project kick-off and methodological meetings,
advising on study design, statistical methodology and analysis strategies.
Perform data management activities, including the preparation, validation and documentation of research datasets.
Conduct biostatistical and analytical analyses, including the application of machine learning techniques where appropriate, and prepare the corresponding technical and statistical reports.
Support researchers in the interpretation and communication of results, including participation in meetings where study findings are discussed.
Draft service proposals and associated budgets, in coordination with BIDU procedures and institutional guidelines.
Contribute to the definition, standardization and continuous improvement of analytical workflows and best practices within BIDU.
Collaborate closely with other BIDU profiles (bioinformatics, data science, AI and project management) to ensure methodological consistency and effective data integration across projects.
Participate in training, knowledge-sharing and capacity-building activities in line with the BIDU Training Plan.
Ensure compliance with institutional procedures, quality systems and data governance principles.
Labour conditions:
Full-time position: 37.5 hours/week.
Starting date: To be determined.
Gross annual salary: According to experience and skills, in line with the VHIR Collective Agreement.
Contract: Permanent.
