Clinical Researcher (Infection and immunity in the paediatric patient)
The Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) is a public sector institution that promotes and develops biomedical research, innovation and teaching at Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, one of the largest hospital campuses in Europe.
The I2P2-RG (Infections and Immunodeficiencies in Paediatric Patients Research Group) conducts research and implementation projects focused on child health, immunodeficiencies, infectious diseases and health systems strengthening, both in high and low- and middle-income countries. The group collaborates with international partners and healthcare institutions to generate evidence and improve clinical care for vulnerable populations.
We are seeking a Paediatrician with experience or strong interest in global health to work within the Infectious Diseases and Global Child Health activities, collaborating with Hospital Nossa Senhora da Paz in Cubal, Angola, where this position will be based. The role includes supporting paediatric care, training local professionals and implementing research projects addressing infectious diseases, malaria and child health.
Main responsibilities and duties:
Clinical care
Provide paediatric clinical care in inpatient and outpatient services at Hospital Nossa Senhora da Paz (Cubal, Angola).
Support management of severe paediatric conditions including infectious diseases, malaria, malnutrition and neonatal complications.
Contribute to strengthening paediatric clinical protocols and quality of care.
Training and capacity building
Provide bedside teaching and mentoring to local physicians, nurses and medical trainees.
Participate in the development of clinical training sessions and educational activities.
Support strengthening of paediatric clinical decision-making and diagnostic capacity.
Research and project activities
Coordinate clinical research activities within the MULTIPLY project, funded by La Caixa Foundation.
Support implementation research and operational research activities conducted by the I2P2-RG.
Contribute to data collection, monitoring and research documentation.
Participate in scientific dissemination and reporting activities when relevant.
Coordination and collaboration
Collaborate with local hospital leadership and health authorities.
Liaise with the VHIR I2P2-RG team and international partners.
Participate in project meetings and contribute to project monitoring.
Education and qualifications:
Required:
Medical degree
Specialisation in Paediatrics
Eligibility to practice medicine internationally
Fluency in Catalan, Spanish and English
Desirable:
Training in infectious diseases or public health
Knowledge of Portuguese
Experience and knowledge:
Required:
Clinical experience in paediatrics
Ability to work in resource-limited settings
Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
Desirable:
Experience working in low-income countries
Experience in clinical or operational research
Experience in infectious diseases or tropical medicine
Labour conditions:
Working hours: Full-time (37,5 hours per week).
Starting date: October 2026.
Gross annual salary: Remuneration will be determined by experience, skills and responsibilities and aligned with the Collective Agreement pay scale.
Contract type: Technical and scientific activities contract linked to project activities.
Duration: 6 months.
Location: Cubal, Benguela Province, Angola.
