Bioinformatics Technician
The Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) is a public sector institution that promotes and develops biomedical research, innovation and teaching at Vall d’Hebron University Hospital.
The Biomedical Data Intelligence Unit (BIDU) is a transversal core facility within the Digital Transformation Area, providing expertise in biostatistics, bioinformatics, data science and artificial intelligence applied to biomedical research. BIDU supports research groups across the Vall d’Hebron Campus, ensuring methodological rigor, reproducibility, data governance and quality compliance.
The Bioinformatics Technician will provide technical bioinformatics analysis and support to biomedical research projects, working closely with research groups and other BIDU profiles. The role is technical and service-oriented, focused on the execution of bioinformatics analyses, data management tasks and pipeline-based workflows, following established methodologies and procedures, while contributing to a collaborative and innovation-driven research environment.
Main responsibilities and duties:
Participate in initial meetings with researchers to understand bioinformatics analysis requests and study requirements.
Execute bioinformatics analyses following established methodologies and pipelines.
Perform data management tasks, including data preparation, transformation, validation and documentation.
Prepare technical reports and analysis documentation.
Support researchers in the interpretation and communication of bioinformatics results.
Participate in internal cross-reviews and quality checks of analyses within BIDU.
Attend and respond to bioinformatics consultations addressed to the unit.
Participate in training and knowledge-sharing activities according to the BIDU Training Plan.
Ensure compliance with quality systems, data governance principles and institutional procedures.
Education and qualifications:
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences / Bioengineering / Bioinformatics / Biology or related fields. Master’s degree or PhD will be valued positively.
Additional or specialised training in Bioinformatics.
Fluency in Catalan, Spanish and English (professional proficiency).
Desirable:
Additional or specialised training in Biostatistics.
Experience and knowledge:
Required:
Minimum 2 years of experience (or equivalent) performing tasks related to bioinformatics or biomedical data analysis.
Proven experience in bioinformatics data analysis, including:
Pre-processing and analysis of biological datasets.
Execution of bioinformatics workflows and pipelines.
Strong practical knowledge of computational and bioinformatics environments, including:
Scripting and analytical programming using Python and/or R.
Experience working with omics and high-throughput biological data, such as:
RNA-seq (bulk and/or single-cell),
WES / WGS,
Metagenomics or similar technologies.
Ability to produce technical reports, document analyses and communicate results clearly.
Desirable:
Experience working in collaborative biomedical research groups, with direct interaction with researchers.
Familiarity with electronic data capture (EDC) systems, such as REDCap or similar platforms.
Experience or familiarity with ETL tools and workflows, including data extraction, transformation and loading processes applied to biomedical or research datasets.
Experience with statistical and data analysis software commonly used in biomedical research, such as GraphPad Prism, Stata or similar tools.
Strong practical knowledge of computational and bioinformatics environments, including Unix / GNU Linux systems.
Experience working under ISO 9000 (or similar) quality standards, including adherence to procedures, documentation and process standardisation.
Knowledge of reproducible research practices (scripted analyses, version control, documentation).
Proactive, collaborative and service-oriented mindset, with strong attention to detail and quality.
Labour conditions:
Working hours: Full-time (37,5 hours per week).
Starting date: June 2026
Gross annual salary: Remuneration will be determined by experience, skills and responsibilities and aligned with the Collective Agreement pay scale.
Contract type: Temporary contract (5 months)
