Research Laboratory Technician (Diabetes and Metabolism Research Group)
VHIR is offering a position for a Research Laboratory Technician within the Diabetes and Metabolism Research Group to contribute to the project “Harnessing the biology of regulatory T cells: cutting-edge therapy for diabetic retinopaty and age-related macular degeneration (T-REGENERON)” (PID2025-176355OB-I00. Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades).
Main responsibilities and duties:
The successful candidate will provide technical and organisational support for the following activities:
Animal care and welfare, including routine monitoring and handling.
Administration of experimental treatments, including ocular treatments and eye drops where required.
Eye dissection, processing, preservation and documentation of retinal samples.
Preparation and maintenance of retinal explants and mammalian cell/tissue cultures.
Experimental procedures, including flow cytometry, PCR, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, Western blotting and ELISA.
Training and day-to-day technical support for students and researchers in laboratory procedures.
Laboratory organisation, sample tracking, reagent and inventory management, and maintenance of accurate experimental records.
Education and qualifications:
Required:
University degree (BSc or equivalent) in Biomedical Sciences, Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Pharmacy, or a closely related life sciences discipline.
Accredited certification for the handling of research animals.
Good command of written and spoken English.
Demonstrable experience in retinal research, supported by peer-reviewed scientific publications.
Desirable:
Master’s degree in a biomedical or life-science discipline.
Experience and knowledge:
Required:
At least two years of hands-on experience in biomedical research in a similar role or research laboratory.
Practical experience working with laboratory animals and ocular/retinal tissue, including eye dissection, retinal processing and/or retinal explant cultures.
Sound knowledge of retinal anatomy and physiology.
Experience with mammalian cell and tissue culture.
Practical experience in flow cytometry.
Practical experience in PCR and standard molecular biology techniques.
Experience with Western blotting and ELISA.
Experience with histology, immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry.
Excellent manual dexterity and fine motor skills for handling delicate ocular tissues.
Methodical, highly organised and reliable, with excellent attention to detail and accurate record-keeping.
Experience in training, teaching or supervising undergraduate and/or Master's students.
Desirable:
Research experience in retinal diseases, ocular biology, neuroinflammation and/or diabetic complications.
Labour conditions:
Working hours: Full-time (37,5 hours per week).
Starting date: 1st October 2026.
Gross annual salary: 22.170,22€
Contract type: Technical and scientific activities contract linked to project activities.
