Labour conditions:
Working hours: Full-time (37,5 hours per week).
Starting date: Immediately following publication of the grant resolution.
Gross annual salary: According to the conditions established by the FPU2026 call.
Contract type: Predoctoral
Duration: 4 years, and linked to the following project: Unraveling the cardiotoxic effects of micro/nanoplastics in healthy and diseased hearts. (project funded by Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades, PI26/00425, from 2027 to 2030).
Project Summary: The cardiovascular effects of micro/nanoplastics (MNPs) remain poorly characterized, but they have been linked to systemic inflammation, thrombosis, and endothelial dysfunction. MNPs were detected in human blood, atherosclerotic plaques, and thrombi, and preclinical studies showed they promote oxidative stress and endothelial injury. However, the impact on diseased myocardium and the polymer-specific toxicity have not been investigated.
Hypothesis: Exposure to MNPs promotes myocardial inflammation and oxidative stress, aggravating ventricular remodeling in the presence of pre-existing cardiac injury, in a polymer-dependent way.
Objective: To evaluate the impact of MNPs on myocardium with prior pathology, comparing the effects of different polymers.
Experimental substudy: Rats will be orally exposed to different MNPs. Effects will be assessed in healthy hearts and in models of post-infarction or pressure overload-induced remodeling (scar size, ventricular function, etc). Mechanisms will be assessed by histology, transcriptomics, ROS quantification, and assessment of mitochondrial function.
Clinical substudy: Observational study in patients undergoing aortic valve surgery (n=100). MNPs will be detected and quantified in valves by pyrolysis-GC/MS. Associations between total burden, polymer type, and clinical and prognostic parameters will be analyzed.
This project will define the clinical relevance and mechanisms of MNP-induced cardiotoxicity according to composition.
